Black Medic, Medicago lupulina

Black Medic, Medicago Iupulina that I found in my garden.

Did you find Black Medic in your garden?

Black Medic, Medicago lupulina, is an invasive weed common to North America.

This weed is typically found in dry soil that is nutrient deficient. It spreads low level and has bright yellow flowers that turn to black seeds when mature.

This is not a weed you want to grow in your garden without intention. It produces thousands of seeds and is difficult to control once established. It prevents the germination of other plants. Promptly remove the weed if ever you find it without intentional planting. Since they thrive in low level nitrogen and compact turf, aerating soil and increasing nutrients will help in prevention of these pest weeds.

The yellow blooms are extremely attractive to bees and makes flavorful honey. The black seeds can be used to make flour. The seeds and foliage are both edible.

This is Black Medic, Medicago Iupulina from a different viewpoint that I found in my garden.
